Dewi Durgamahasisuramardhini is a combination of the words Durga, Mahisa, Asura, and Mardhini. The statue of Goddess Durga has many hands, more than 8, 12 or in some statues up to 16. Goddess Durga is the name of the sacred name or wife of Lord Shiva, Mahisa is a buffalo, Asura means a giant, while Mardhini means to destroy or kill. So, Durgamahasisuramardhini means Goddess Durga who is killing a giant in the body of a buffalo. Durga is a well-known goddess figure in India, and is also highly revered in Hinduism. He is worshiped in the fall of the second half of the month Asvina in the Northeastern Indian province.

According to the Devi Mahatya text, it is said that the gods were once defeated by the asuras or giants under the leadership of Mahisasura. The gods asked the help of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu to be able to defeat and expel the asuras who had disturbed heaven. Hearing what had happened to the gods, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu became very angry at the actions of the asuras, so that from their mouths came out tongues of blazing fire. Tongues of fire also came out from the bodies of the other gods. The power of the flames combined to illuminate all directions which eventually gathered and formed the body of a very beautiful woman and became Goddess Durga.

Shiva gave his Trident, Vishnu gave Chakra, Baruna gave a Sangkha and Pasa, a pearl necklace and a pair of incorruptible clothes, Agni gave a spear, Maruta gave a bow with arrows, Indra gave Fajra and Ganta, Yama gave Kamandalu, Kala gave a sword and shield, Vivakarma gave a shiny axe along with weapons and impermeable armor, Himavat gave a lion as a ride, Kuwera gave a bowl full of wine, and Sesa gave a snake necklace decorated with large jewels.

Through Goddess Durga, the gods finally managed to defeat Mahisasura by stepping on his neck. From Mahisa's head or mouth, an Asura-giant appeared and he immediately killed him.
